A March 2021 Library Journal survey on library marketing found that out of the 310 Public Libraries surveyed, "...nearly nine-in-ten respondents agree that 'the library’s dependence on marketing has increased due to COVID closures'." And while the average number of programs and events has decreased due to COVID-19, "...libraries are relying more on marketing, particularly digital marketing, to get the word out about virtual programs."
Library marketing is essential. But, what might be even more impactful is email targeting. Send the right message, to the right user, at the right time. Instead of sending the same message to all library patrons, consider targeting your message to unique groups of users.
Avoid the trap of telling yourself,
"Everyone needs to know this!"
and instead focus on,
"If I were patron A, would this information serve me?"
